Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Zita Kavungirwa Kayange
Zita was a women’s rights activist who defended the rights of rural women in Greater Kivu.
She was the first Executive Director of UWAKI - a well known women’s organisation. Through her work with Women's Network for Rights and Peace (RFDP), and the Women's Caucus of South Kivu for Peace, she committed her life to helping to restore peace in the Eastern DRC. She spoke out strongly against the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
In 2006, she put herself forward as a candidate in the first democratic elections in the DRC. Although she did not win, she continued to advocate for women’s rights and the South Kivu community remembers her fondly.
Elina Margarita Castillo Jiménez
Biography
Elina is a young afro-Dominican intersectional feminist and human rights lawyer, committed to use her voice and skills to build a more just, empathic and inclusive world. She started Law school at 16, convinced it would give her the tools to understand and promote social justice. After a J.D. in the Dominican Republic, she pursued an LL.M. in Public International Law and Human Rights in the UK as a Chevening Scholar. She was the only Latinx-Caribbean woman in her class, graduating with honours.
Elina has worked at the intersection of human rights, gender, migration and policy, from government, grassroots collectives and international organizations. She helped litigate cases on gender-based violence before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. As a member of the Youth Advisory Panel of UNFPA, she contributed to strengthening sexual and reproductive rights in the Dominican Republic. She co-led Amnesty International’s first campaign on sex workers’ rights in the Americas, developing strong partnerships with sex-worker led organizations and using Amnesty’s position to amplify women human rights defenders and sex workers’ voices.
Elina is part of Foro Feminista Magaly Pineda and the Global Shapers Community. She speaks Spanish, French and English. Thanks to her diverse background, Elina brings strong governance and strategic planning skills, substantive expertise on the United Nations and regional human rights mechanisms and her bold determination to keep AWID as an inclusive organization for all women, especially young and Caribbean feminists. With these offerings, joins a global sisterhood of feminist badasses, where she can keep nurturing her feminist leadership and never again feel alone in her path.

Gender Impact Investing (GII) is now trending as a solution to gender inequality. Yet, as our report indicates, it is actually part of the problem. Public and private institutions marketing GII equate it with promotion of gender equality and with increased resources for women and girls.
Neither claim is evidence-based.
Rather, GII is another expression of subjecting our lives and societies to the same financial logic that has shaped, and continues shaping, the profound inequalities in our world.
With this report, AWID offers the readers - feminists, gender justice advocates and stakeholders in gender impact investing - a critical analysis and substantiated evidence to understand GII, its narratives, and economic and political implications for feminist movements.

Bessy Ferrera
Bessy Ferrera was a lifelong defender of the human rights of trans people, sex workers and HIV positive people in Honduras.
Bessy was also a member of Arcoíris, an organisation which supports the LGBTI+ community. She was also a focal point person for the Right Here, Right Now (Derechos aquí y Ahora) Platform of Honduras, and advocated strongly for full citizenship of trans people, and the passing of a gender identity law that would allow trans people to change their gender identity legally.

Bessy was a sex worker, and in early July 2019, was shot to death by two men while working in the streets of Comayagüela. Her assailants were subsequently arrested.
Bessy is one of many LGBTI+ rights defenders in Honduras, who were murdered because of their identities and work. Other companeras include: Cynthia Nicole, Angy Ferreira, Estefania "Nia" Zuniga, Gloria Carolina Hernandez Vasquez, Paola Barraza, Violeta Rivas, and Sherly Montoya.
Bessy’s case is emblematic of injustice and a much larger problem of the systematic violence the LGBTI+ community faces in Honduras as the state fails to guarantee rights offer and fails to offer protection. This has created a culture of impunity.
Despite the risks LGBTI+ defenders in Honduras face, they continue their work to challenge and resist violence, and fight stigma and discrimination on a daily basis.

Jessica Whitbread
Biography
Jessica es une artista activista queer de Toronto (Canadá), aunque actualmente reside en Bulgaria. Posee más de 15 años de experiencia de trabajo en la respuesta al VIH en las intersecciones del género y el VIH con poblaciones clave (trabajadoras/es sexuales, mujeres que usan drogas, comunidades LGBTQI, personas privadas de su libertad y, desde luego, personas que viven con el VIH). A Jessica le encanta la construcción de movimientos y pensar, organizar y trazar estrategias para intervenciones artísticas. Un divertido proyecto que comenzó en 2013 fue LOVE POSITIVE WOMEN, en el que participan más de 125 agrupaciones y organizaciones comunitarias de todo el mundo. Este tiene lugar cada año entre el 1 y el 14 de febrero para celebrar a las mujeres que viven con el VIH en sus comunidades.

Nous sommes ravis de partager notre nouveau Plan stratégique (2023-2027) avec tout le monde. Bien tôt, AWID fera une annonce pour informer notre communauté et nos membres.
L’Association pour les droits des femmes dans le développement (AWID) est une organisation féministe, associative et internationale de soutien aux mouvements.
Depuis plus de 35 ans, l’AWID fait partie d’un incroyable écosystème des mouvements féministes qui oeuvrent en faveur de la justice de genre et des droits humains des femmes à travers le monde.
Notre vision
L’AWID imagine un monde où les réalités féministes prospèrent, où les ressources et le pouvoir sont partagés de façon à permettre à chacun-e, y compris aux générations futures, de s’épanouir et de réaliser leur plein potentiel dans la dignité, l’amour et le respect et où la Terre nourrit la vie dans toute sa diversité.

Notre mission est d’aider les mouvements féministes, en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre à s’épanouir, à être un élément moteur de l’opposition aux systèmes d’oppression et à co-créer des réalités féministes.

Nous promouvons notre travail au travers des stratégies suivantes:
Plaidoyer et campagnes
Nous tirons collectivement parti de notre portée, de notre pouvoir, de nos ressources et de nos relations afin d’influencer stratégiquement les politiques et les pratiques. Nous visons à promouvoir les programmes féministes à travers les collaborations que nous menons avec les décideurs politiques, les fonda-trices-teurs et les activistes au sein des espaces régionaux et internationaux. Dans le cadre des efforts que nous déployons pour renforcer notre pouvoir et influence collectifs, nous incitons également les mouvements féministes et de lutte pour les droits des femmes à accorder une place centrale aux mouvements historiquement opprimés.
Rassemblement et coopération
Nous nous servons de notre pouvoir mobilisateur pour faciliter le dialogue et élaborer des stratégies sur des questions clés. Nous connectons nos membres et nos allié-e-s les une-s- aux autres, et partageons et échangeons nos ressources, nos idées et nos actions sur des questions pertinentes. Nous organisons des rassemblements et mettons à disposition des espaces nous permettant de consolider nos mouvements et de nouer des rapports les un-e-s avec les autres, d’imaginer et d’envisager de nouveaux horizons, de développer des stratégies d’influence efficaces et de créer ensemble des programmes et des processus importants.
Solidarité et construction de liens
Nous mobilisons nos membres et les mouvements que nous soutenons pour consolider l’action collective en solidarité avec les causes et les défenseur-e-s féministes en danger. Nous créons des partenariats, pratiquons l’écoute active et tissons des liens de solidarité continus et sur le long terme. Aux côtés de défenseur-e-s, nous oeuvrons à établir une base de connaissances et à soutenir des réseaux de solidarité autour de la protection et du bien-être.
Arts et expression créative
Nous reconnaissons la valeur unique des stratégies culturelles et créatives dans la lutte contre les oppressions et l’injustice. Nous travaillons avec des artistes qui accordent une place prépondérante aux voix féministes et aux récits des communautés historiquement opprimées. Nous voyons en cette tactique émergente l’art et l’expression créative comme autant de moyens nous permettant d’imaginer un monde où l’on continue de célébrer des réalités féministes, et où ces dernières continuent de prospérer.

Nos initiatives oeuvrent à l’intersection des zones de changement que nous abordons, des mouvements que nous priorisons et des stratégies que nous déployons:
Promotion des droits universels et de la justice
Nous surveillons, documentons et visibilisons la façon dont les acteurs anti-droits opèrent et conspirent au sein des espaces multilatéraux, et soutenons les mouvements et allié-e-s féministes, oeuvrant en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre pour contrer leur influence et leur impact.
Construction d’économies féministes
En travaillant sur l’extractivisme, la justice fiscale et la responsabilisation des entreprises, nous acquérons des connaissances sur le pouvoir des entreprises et leur influence; nous plaidons pour la responsabilisation des entreprises et la distribution équitable des richesses; et amplifions les propositions féministes en faveur d’économies plus justes.
Ressources des mouvements féministes
Nous développons des analyses accessibles et orientées vers l’action concernant l’état des ressources attribuées aux mouvements féministes. Nous nous efforçons d’influencer les pratiques et politiques des donateurs, d’approfondir et maintenir les subventions en faveur de changements sociaux féministes et de soutenir les besoins et les stratégies des mouvements.
L’AWID s’engage expressément à avoir de l’impact dans le monde et à renforcer nos propres résiliences et apprentissages organisationnels afin de consolider davantage les mouvements féministes internationaux.

Yelena Grigoriyeva, a menudo conocida entre sus amigxs como Lena, fue una destacada defensora de los derechos LGBT en Rusia.
Formó parte de movimientos democráticos, anti-guerra y LGBT. En su activismo, fue una crítica feroz del Presidente Vladimir Putin y su administración, y expresó su oposición a la anexión por parte de Rusia de la península de Crimea de Ucrania y al maltrato de prisionerxs.
Yelena se declaró bisexual a principios de 2019. "Su salida del armario fue una sorpresa para mí, y no la aprobé. Le dije: ‘Escucha, Lena, ya estás en la mira por tu actividad política. Te acabas de clavar otro blanco en el pecho’". - Olga Smirnova
Yelena, de hecho, recibió múltiples amenazas de muerte y, según algunxs de sus conocidxs, figuraba en un sitio web homofóbico que instaba a sus visitantes a que persiguieran a las personas LGBT. Yelena denunció las amenazas a la policía, pero el Estado ruso no le proporcionó ningún tipo de protección.
Sin embargo, Yelena, a pesar de vivir en una sociedad en la que la oposición política, así como lxs integrantes de la comunidad LGBT y lxs defensores de sus derechos, se enfrentan a una violencia continua y creciente, siguió haciendo campaña por la justicia social y la igualdad.
"No se perdió ni una sola acción. Y la detuvieron tantas veces que hasta perdí la cuenta", Olga Smirnova (compañera activista de la oposición y amiga).
Yelena fue asesinada el 21 de julio de 2019, cerca de su casa. Las autoridades detuvieron a una persona sospechosa pero, según algunas fuentes, muchxs amigxs y compañerxs activistas creen que es un chivo expiatorio y que, en realidad, se trata de un asesinato político deliberado.
Para los familiares y amigxs de Yelena, su caso sigue sin resolverse aunque la persona sospechosa haya confesado.
En 2013, Rusia aprobó una ley que prohíbe la difusión de lo que describió como "propaganda gay". En 2014, Human Rights Watch publicó un informe al respecto.
Ȃurea Mouzinho
Biography
Âurea Mouzinho est une organisatrice féministe dans le domaine de la justice économique. Originaire de Louanda en Angola, elle compte 10 ans de carrière dans la recherche, le subventionnement, le plaidoyer et le renforcement de mouvement pour les droits des femmes et la justice économique en Afrique et dans le Sud global. Actuelle responsable des programmes pour l’Afrique chez Thousand Currents, elle participe également au comité de rédaction de Feminist Africa et est membre d’Ondjango Feminista, un collectif féministe qu’elle a co-fondé en 2016. Tout juste maman d’un petit garçon Gémeaux, Ȃurea aime les journées tranquilles avec sa petite famille et les longues promenades sur la plage. Il lui arrive parfois de tweeter via son compte @kitondowe.

From “WID” to “GAD” to Women’s Rights: The First Twenty Years of AWID
In 2002 AWID celebrated its 20th anniversary. Given the challenging political, economic and funding environment in which women's organizations must survive, a milestone such as this is worthy of recognition.
In the past two decades the geo-political landscape has been transformed and development theories have come and gone, but approaches to ensure women benefit from development processes have endured.
In its twenty-year history, AWID grew from a volunteer organization for U.S. "Women in Development" (WID) specialists to an international network striving to support proactive and strategic gender equality research, activism and policy dialogue.
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, this paper charts not only the changes in AWID's organizational structure and goals but also the shifts in policy approaches to gender equality in a changing global environment, through the lens of a membership organization committed to improving the lives of women and girls everywhere.
